Drumstick Sambar (Murungakkai Sambar)

Many viewers may think what's there new in a sambar recipe, yeah it's true. But my point is each and everyone's sambar tastes different because of their sambar powder. The powder that am using here suits for only sambar because some (me too) will add sambar powder to some curries. This powder has a nice aroma after cooking. Click this for sambar powder recipe. Once you cook by this method then you will do it again for sure.

Cooking time: 35 mins

Serving: 4

Ingredients:

Drumstick - 2 (chopped)
Tuvar dal - 2 tbsn
Masoor dal - 2 tbsn
Onion - 1 (thinly sliced)
Tomato - 1 (thinly sliced)
Green chilli - 2 (slitted)
Red chilli - 2
Tamarind - extract from a small gooseberry size
Sambar powder -1 tbsn
Thaalippu vadagam - 1 tspn
Turmeric - 1/4 tspn
Asafoetida - 1/4 tspn
Oil - 2 tspn
Curry leaves few
Coriander leaves few
Salt to taste

Method:

1. Grab all the ingredients. (I didn't slice the onions in the picture)

2.  Heat a pan. Add oil. Add thaalippu vadagam. Once it splutters add onions, green chilli, red chilli. Saute till the onion becomes light brown.

3. Add tomatoes and saute till it becomes mushy.

4. Add drumstick, turmeric, salt. Saute for a minute.

5. Add a cup of water. Close the lid and cook for about 12 mins until the drumstick is cooked.

6. Add cooked dal(mashed), tamarind extract and a cup of water. Cook till the raw smell of tamarind goes.

7. Add sambar powder with 3/4 cup of water and cook for 2 mins. Add asafoetida.

8. Switch off and garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves. Sambar is ready now.

Notes:

I have added thaalippu vadagam for seasoning. You can add usual seasonings like mustard seeds, uraddal and cumin seeds also.
You can do the Sambar with tuvar dal alone too. Always try to soak dal for faster cooking.
This recipe suits both for tiffin and rice.
