South Indian dal / paruppu kadaisal n white rice in Instant Pot (PIP method)

This is a 2 in 1 recipe that can be quickly done in Instant Pot (IP). Because this is a PIP (Pot In Pot) method of making rice and dal (lentil) together that saves your time a lot with a mess free cooking. The only use of stove top here is we are going to give tadka / seasoning atlast.

Cooking time: 15 mins

Serving: 3

Ingredients:

Sona masoori rice - 1 cup
Tuvar dal (split pigeon peas) - 1/3 cup (washed and soaked for 1/2 hr)
Onion - 1/4 cup (finely chopped)
Tomato - 1/2 (finely sliced)
Garlic - 1 big clove (finely chopped)
Green chilli - 4 (each broken into 2 pieces)
Turmeri - 1/4 tspn
Coriander leaves - few (chopped)
Salt to taste

For seasoning:

Oil - 2 tspn
Red chilli - 2
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tspn
Cumin seeds -1 tspn
Curry leaves - few
Asafoetida - 1/4 tspn

Method:

1. Grab all the ingredients.

2. To the inner pot of IP add soaked dal, onion, tomato, green chillies, garlic, coriander leaves, turmeric with 1 1/2 cup of water.

3. Place the trivet into the pot.( Don't worry if it touches the dal mixture). Now place the rice kept in a stainless steel vessel with water ratio (1: 2 1/2) on the trivet.

4. Switch on the IP . Close the lid in sealing position. Press the rice button that will show 12 mins in Low Pressure (LP). Do NPR (Natural Pressure Release) when it is done.

5. Switch off and open the lid.

6. Take out the rice.

7. Now we have to season the dal with the ingredients mentioned for seasoning. Add it to the dal mixture. Add salt.

8. Press the saute mode and cook for another 5 mins to get a little thicker consistency. Smash well with a wooden ladle.

9. Easy simple dal and hot rice is ready simultaneously to serve with a dollop of ghee.

Notes:

Soaking the dal gives you mushy texture. Soaking the rice is optional.
You can also season in the first step to save even more time.
